Abstract: Nowadays, 65% of students taking the First Year of Infant Education in Ceuta State Schools, don’t speak Spanish as a mother tongue. In fact, they speak an Arabic dialect widely used in Ceuta called dariya. This dialect comes from a Moroccan area known as Jbāla and is characterized by simple grammatical structures and also by the usage of lexical items borrowed from Spanish.
Most students from Ceuta don’t have a sound knowledge of Spanish or have lacks and problems in Spanish language acquisition and use. This can actually turn into academic failure, a fact pointed out by teachers, who usually spot out difficulties related to oral and/or writing language acquisition among their pupils.
In this work, I mainly analyse basics oral and writing mistakes made by Arabic students from Ceuta with the purpose to systematise them so that teachers can schedule classroom activities in relation to this type of problems.
Being these mistakes catalogued and described, I provide a brief methodological guide with which the afore-mentioned linguistic difficulties can be partially or completely reduced.
Eventually, the general aim of this work is having a positive influence on students’s academic results.
