ABSTRACT
This article analyses “Deutsches Requiem” by Borges and Doktor Faustus by Thomas Mann, two stories with Faustian characters, from the point of view of its representation of the Second World War. Both authors have often been criticized: Borges because of the unreality of his fiction, and Mann because he did not propose an analysis of the economic and social reasons that led to Nazism in his “Doktor Faustus”.
Our thesis is that there is no lack of compromise with reality here, but a mythologization of history that makes these works more universal, forcing all nations (not only Germans) to think in-depth about the horrors of the Nazi time.
