Abstract: “Contextual and Referential Aspects in Miguel Hernández’s Tragedy The Bravest Bullfighter”.
The Bravest Bullfighter is Miguel Hernández’s least studied play, unpublished till 1986. For a better understanding and appraisal of its dramatic reach and significance, we have to take into consideration the relevance of its contextual (literary, cultural and economic) and referential (the bullfighting world) aspects. It is so because both aspects affect the dramatic construction of the literary text. With this play, Miguel Hernández joins in the traditional trend of the Spanish drama of Lope, Valle Inclán and Lorca. Though the play was inspired by true events, with a renewed realist drama, the playwright goes beyond them with his reiterative symbolism.
