INGLÉS Y ESPAÑOL EN GIBRALTAR: USOS Y ACTITUDES LINGÜÍSTICAS ENTRE LA POBLACIÓN JOVEN
English and Spanish in Gibraltar: Language choice and attitude among young Gibraltarians.
Between 1999 and 2000 an investigation was carried out in order to find out about language use and attitudes among Gibraltarian young people towards English and Spanish. The main aim was to examine if Spanish was in a situation of language maintenance, or on the contrary, of language shift to English. The data of 95 informants was quantitatively analyzed using ONE-Way Anova, Factorial Analysis and Multiple Regression. The results confirmed that the Spanish is used more in informal interactions: family, neighbors and friends, although English, to a lesser extent, also occurs. On the other hand, English is used in the school, mainly when students interact with professors. However, Spanish also emerged when interacting with classmates. Finally, the results reveal that Gibraltarian young people value positively the situation of bilingualism in Gibraltar.
