Verónica Ribera
Resumen
This work analyzes the linguistic situation lived in high school in Ceuta, where students coming from four cultures “to discover” –Christian, Muslim, Jewish and Hindu, coexist.
Languages constantly in contact within multicultural context in Ceuta are basically ‘Darija’ –or Moroccan Arabian dialect, and Spanish language. So, in this work will be analyzed the social impact that ‘Darija’ has in high school and the social valuation that bilingual students make of ‘Darija’, that is to say their mother language, their most comfortable language, the language used at home, with friends or when they do the shopping. It’s a language exclusively based in oral productions that in occasions is also a source of problems due not only to linguistics interferences with Spanish language, but social and emotional consequences because of use.
As can be detected, this diglossic context –with ‘Darija’ strongly disparaged, make that Muslim students –mainly from culturally disadvantages homes, come into a situation of inferiority respect of their non-Muslims classmates. Finally, the connection between low marks from students with ‘Darija’ as mother language and high academic failure indexes will be analyzed, and also other consequences like low self-esteem that those actions produce.
