Abstract: The study of slang and linguistic creativity has generally
held a prevailing position in modern linguistics, especially in the
field of translation studies. What follows is an approximation to the
schools of linguistics and the manipulation school in an attempt to
limn how slang would be analysed according to the theoretical
principles sustained by each school. Thus, the characteristics and
social function of slang is analysed along with the most significant
postulates of both the schools of linguistics and the manipulation
school in order to identify how the translation of argot would be
approached under each one of them. Some personal considerations are
also offered at the end of the article, once the characteristics of
the aforementioned schools have been analysed, in an attempt to
evaluate the adequacy of both theories for the translation of slang.
