Este artículo analiza el discurso de Martin Luther King ‘I have a dream’ siguiendo los principios de la Gramática Sistémica Funcional. El análisis prestará atención a la función social de la lengua (ideología, contexto de cultura y a las variables del contexto de situación) y a la relación entre la gramática y el significado al explorar la sintaxis marcada, los recursos retóricos y el vocabulario. Este estudio mostrará evidencias lingüísticas que explican cómo el discurso crea significado con distintos recursos lingüísticos.
El análisis mostrará cómo la selección de distintos recursos retóricos permiten al autor crear una realidad social por medio de la lengua, contribuir a la viveza del discurso y construir la realidad del momento histórico que el discurso muestra: el periodo histórico de explotación de la población negra en Estados Unidos.

Abstract

Following the framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics, this article aims at developing a study of Martin Luther King’s speech ‘I have a dream’, paying attention to aspects related to the social function of language (ideology, context of culture, and the variables of the context of situation), and to the relationship between grammar and meaning (marked syntax, rhetorical devices, and vocabulary). This study intends to explain how this speech creates meaning with different linguistic resources.
The analysis will show how the selection of different linguistic resources allows the author to create a social reality through language, to contribute to the vividness of the speech, and to build the reality of the historical moment that the speech shows: the historical period of exploitation of black population in the United States.
