ABSTRACT
Prevalence of rare diseases is 5 cases to every 10,000 inhabitants. In Spain over 3 million people have been diagnosed one of these minority disorders, many of which have a genetic origin and are highly disabling. These disorders have become a growing public health concern, resulting in increasing social and media interest in them in the last years. This research is aimed at analysing visual representation of patients suffering from these minority disorders through the pictures published in the Spanish national press. The visual framing theory is considered suitable to reveal the treatment and coverage given to each rare disease-related actor (patients, relatives, doctors, researchers, etc.) by the analysed newspapers. Moreover, the network of meanings and latent constructs or variables underlying these visual news frames is also studied.
